Question by Deirdre Oh: Why would a person who can’t sleep refuse sleeping pills?
If someone had horrible sleepless nights all the time and could never get any rest, and were prescribed sleeping pills, but refuses to take them, what are some possible psychological reasons for this?
I know without knowing the person/case you can’t diagnose, but does anyone have any IDEAS as to why a person who can’t sleep wouldn’t want sleeping pills?

Maybe they don’t want to feel dependent on medication. Even if it seems irrational, some people have that weird kind of pride and hate anything that seems like an ‘intervention’. It’s kinda hard to describe.

They are afraid of the side effects. Some people drive or do other things while taking these sleeping medications. Someone I know ordered furniture for their living room while taking one of these medications.
I wouldn’t take them for the reasons above because I would be afraid that I would do something while sleeping such as driving or buying things.

Because they don’t want to become reliant on the pills. The person being offered the pills knows that it is a short-term solution only, and therefore does not want to rely on that because they will still have to deal with the problem when they come off the pills.

Hope that helps

There are side affects. Just relax. Take a deep breath. And read b4 bed. (Trust me it helps!!!)

Sounds like that person is struggling with control (self-control). Sleeping pills could be seen as giving up control…and if the core issue of sleeplessness is because the person is struggling with some kind of self-control issue, sleeping pills would be a cop-out to that person.

make sense?

Sleep pills are HIGHLY addictive.
If you began to take them, you may not be able to stop. Also, insomnia is often a symptom of a deeper problem.

It is a very smart person that would refuse sleeping pills! Sleeping pills are addictive and you become depend on them. If you cannot sleep there is an underlying stress that is in the body that is affecting the nerves. The stress can even be an abuse from the past.Sleep is the bodies natural repair system if it working than it shows something is wrong. A sleeping pill is like a band aid over the real problem. You must get to the root of the real problem and that does not involve a sleeping pill. It can be a hidden depression or something that has made the person powerless.

It could be possible – like other answers say that they don’t want to become dependant on any drugs
