Question by Mr. 2011: When using sleeping pills, why do I wake up three hours after falling asleep?
If I take sleeping pills, I generally wake up three hours later and then I can’t get back to sleep. I wouldn’t take them if I didn’t need them but it looks like they’re slowly becoming useless too.
Why won’t sleeping pills work and why can’t I sleep when I need to?

Simply because the effects of most sleeping pills wear off within 3 or 4 hours. Losing effect over time is normal too. There is a drug called Ambien CR that is time released to hopefully keep you asleep the whole night, but many doctors don’t like to prescribe this type of drug and as you noticed with the drugs you are taking, you will build a tolerance fairly quickly and there is a rebound effect where when you stop taking it–you have more trouble sleeping than you did before the treatment began.

Don’t take sleeping pills. There are alot of natural ways to get a good night’s sleep. Sleepy time tea, relaxing soft music, herbal remedies.
Have you gone on a sleep study? You may have a sleep disorder, apnea perhaps. I have sleep apnea and need to be hooked up to a machine at night. Consult your physician for a referral to a sleep clinic.
