Deep wrinkles in the forehead, fine lines around the eyes and lines around the mouth, changes in the pigment of the skin, broken capillaries and spider veins are all a result of extrinsic aging and can be avoided to a certain effect. The best way to deal with wrinkles, age spots is to prevent or postpone them for as long as possible.

Although wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, there are various treatment options to reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles. Several anti-wrinkle creams and lotions containing alpha-hydroxy acids are available over-the-counter to smooth lines or wrinkles and increase the volume of tissue cells – these creams are not a miracle cure and cannot remove wrinkles!

Chemical peels and laser resurfacing are techniques used to remove dead cells from the surface layer of the skin thereby stimulating the regenerative process. Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections may also help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles temporarily. More recently, people are choosing plastic surgery to eliminate wrinkles.

The truth is that while creams may help to moisturize the skin, there is no conventional way to get rid of wrinkles. Furthermore, many creams are too rich and may further irritate the skin, or cause the skin to over compensate and disrupt the delicate balance of natural skin oils.

As facial wrinkles in particular seem to reveal the years, in recent times, drastic measures have been introduced to stop, reduce, or get rid of the tell tale signs of aging on the face. The facelift is a cosmetic surgery treatment for wrinkles, pouches, bags, and sagging skin. This is not a long tern answer – as the signs of age will eventually return and another facelift will be needed! Furthermore, these procedures are invasive and cause trauma to the facial tissues.

Natural Alternatives

Natural products such as herbal and homeopathic remedies can help keep skin supple and moisturized in a gentle manner, without disrupting the harmony of the skin. Herbal and homeopathic remedies present a gentle option – without the harsh side effects of chemicals and synthetics.

Spirulina can help to promote skin metabolism and lessen scarring and fine lines while the herb Dandelion can be used to naturally detox the skin and purify the blood and lymphatic system, thus promoting an inner glow that helps create translucent skin and discourage dry facial skin.

Other herbs such as Horsetail and Rosemary can also be beneficial – helping to smooth texture, strengthen and tone the skin while Kali sulph and Silicea nourish skin cells from the inside on a cellular level.

As far as taking care of the oxidation taking place in your body, some herbs have been found to be extremely effective in fighting it out. One such ingredient is Aspalathus linearis (Rooibos) – an all round supportive tonic, and has powerful anti-oxidant properties, fighting free radicals due to its superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic properties.

Grapeseed extract is a potent source of proanthocyanidins, or pycnogenols containing naturally occurring proanthocyanidins – a natural and powerful Antioxidant. Proanthocyanidins also have an affinity for cell membranes, providing support to reduce capillary permeability and fragility.
