Question by Leslie: What are some great tips for weightloss?
I’m trying to lose weight. But not at a drastic pace. I just want to know any good tips that will help lose weight over time. And also good workouts. Please don’t suggest running because that kills my knees. I’m a tall teenage girl. Just want tips that will shed pounds, speed up metabolism, and are healthy.

I do about 30 mins on the elliptical and that has helped me lose weight, also biking a lot will.
As far as speeding up your metabolism just eat normal meals, cut up your food, you’re body will think you’ve eaten more therefore making you believe you’re fuller, quicker so you won’t eat as much.

Hey, Leslie! I’m glad that you are interested in losing your weight slowly and realistically. I actually just wrote a detailed response to another poster that is very similar here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqPn2t.0torBN_m5wJeXyZTsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20110724171850AAMeTVy

If that does not work for whatever reason, here is a condensed version:
Health is a 3 part system. Each of which is equally important. Sensible nutrition, cardiovascular training, and weight training.
Cardio: As a good place to start, I would walk briskly for 20-30 minutes every day. Cardio training can be done safely every single day. There is no reason not to do it unless your body tells you otherwise. Your goal with cardio is to keep your heart rate at 65-85% of your maximum heart rate. This can be found by subtracting your age from 220. (In example, I am 20, so my MHR is 200. The heart rate that I want to aim for during cardio is somewhere between 130 and 170 beats per minute. You can calculate this by finding the pulse in your neck with the forefinger and middlefinger, and counting your pulses for 10 seconds. Multiply this by 6.) If you don’t want to bother with all of the numbers, just stick with time, intensity, and how your body responds. When 20-30 minutes of intense walking becomes too easy, you can do one of two things: add more time, or start jogging/walking. Do not rush to increase intensity. Just stay consistent and you WILL see results.

Weight training: I am not sure what you have in terms of equipment, but you can do one of several things. If you have a gym membership, take advantage of it! As a beginner, you will see the best results from doing a full-body routine 3 days per week. A typical routine would be Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Do not workout consecutive days. If you do not have a gym or free weights available, you can do body resistance training as a great place to start. Again, 3 days per week, non-consecutive. I am going to refer you to this website: http://www.scoobysworkshop.com/index.htm for more detailed instruction that correlates with what you have available. You can make your own personalized routine on Scooby’s site. He is a no frills, straight to the point guy. You will LOVE him. Also, many women are afraid that they will get huge by weight training and don’t do it at all because of that. Do not let this concern you. You will get toned, and you will build muscle, but obviously there is a difference in hormones between the sexes.

Nutrition: This is what will make or break you. If you want what is best for your body, cut out as many processed sugars and foods as possible. You can eat tasty and much cheaper meals if you think healthy. Don’t worry too much about buying organic or the like. Focus on vegetables (frozen veggies hold more nutrients than their counterparts as they are flash frozen, and are relatively cheap), legumes (nuts, seeds, beans), whole, unprocessed wheat cereals, oats, breads, brown rice etc. The fewer ingredients the better. Do not let mass media fool you into thinking you need a ton of dairy and meat to be healthy. One of the best things you can do for your health RIGHT NOW is cut out dairy all together. Your body will thank you a million times over. If you eat meat, think lean: chicken, fish, turkey, low-fat cuts of beef. Again, please reference Scooby’s site for a more customized and detailed nutrition approach.

I hope this helps you get started! Getting healthy is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself. Especially as a teenage girl, now is the time to make this a lifestyle!
