How can some sleep aids be habit forming, and some aren’t, when it’s the fact that you get to sleep, that is addicting?

The addictive ones cause your body and mind to crave the drug, and may cause quite intense withdrawal symptoms when discontinued. The non-addictive ones, like Benadryl (which is what is in Tylenol PM and Unisom, etc), do not have the addictive potential – you can discontinue them without withdrawal symptoms, though the sleep problem may still be there.
The most addictive ones, such as the barbiturates, are not really prescribed by many physicians. Some still prescribe the benzodiazepines, still addictive, but less so.
Ambien and Lunesta are not THAT addictive, but still have potential for abuse and dependency.
I mentioned Benadryl.
To list some Rx meds that are not addictive:
1. Rozerem
2. Small doses of Trazodone or Elavil
Cannabis(marijuana). Studies have shown that marijuana is not an addictive substance (you may do your own research if you wish). Will put you right out.. guranteed.
There is physically addictive and psychologically addictive. Anything can be psychologically addictive to the right personality. The way a drug works can make it more or less physically addictive. (This included herbals. Please make sure you understand that herbals can interact with other drugs or other hebals before you take them!)
