Question by Sam: Sleeping Pills?
A few days back, due to overload of the work, i could not sleep well. It resulted in bad grades in my subjects coz always i felt kind of sleep. I thought to have sleeping pills. They worked fine and now im taking them daily and my life is probably better than before. I just want to ask that are there any side effects of Sleeping Pills? I dont want to leave them atleast for the next couple of months due to this overload work. My age is 21.

You want to be sure to allow enough time to get a full 8 hours of sleep if you take them (ie don’t take at about 1AM or so…no set time..but not so late), because if you wake up before the pills are done you could be going around driving half asleep and maybe even have hallucinations. Do you absolutely HAVE to overwork yourself???

Some people find that they can’t sleep without the sleeping pills after using them for a while. Some people find that the effect wears off and they no longer work as well. Also, if you have to wake up before the recommended 8 hours of sleep after taking sleeping pills you may find yourself disoriented and unable to concentrate because the drug is still in your system.

Also, this question would probably should have been posted in the general health section, not the food and drink section.

Sleeping pills are sedatives and “A sedative is a substance that depresses the central nervous system (CNS), resulting in calmness, relaxation, reduction of anxiety, sleepiness, slowed breathing, slurred speech, staggering gait, poor judgment, and slow, uncertain reflexes. Sedatives may be referred to as tranquilizers, depressants, anxiolytics, soporifics, sleeping pills, downers, or sedative-hypnotics”

All sedatives can cause physiological and psychological dependence when taken regularly over a period of time, even at therapeutic doses. When dependent users decrease or end use suddenly, they will exhibit withdrawal symptoms ranging from restlessness, insomnia and anxiety to convulsions and death. When users become psychologically dependent, they feel as if they need the drug to function although there is no biological dependence. In both types of dependence, finding and using the drug becomes the focus in life.

Well you put this in the wrong category. However, I have sleep apnea, so I feel for you, so I will answer.

All sleeping pills except carry a risk of dependency. In time you will HAVE to use them in order to sleep.

Also ALL drugs, sleeping pills or not, have side effects. Some of the side effects from long term use can be quite bad making the “treatment” worst then the illness. That is why all “long term” treatments should be monitored by a doctor. All over the counter pills (I’m guessing that is what you are referring to) have a “do not take longer then X” statement.

At 21 you should be sleeping fine. If you are not, you need to look at what the real issue it. Are you overdoing the caffeine? Is it stress or depression? Are you not sleeping well when you are asleep?

Sleeping pills are meant to be a short term stop gap. If this is just a once in a while thing, they are ok. However, I find that most sleeping pills help me to sleep, but not feel rested. This defeats the purpose.

However, If you are chronically tired you may have sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome or you may be addicted to caffeine or other stimulants. If your not over doing the caffeine, see a doctor. Let him refer you to a sleep specialist.
