Question by ~Mom to be 2 my Princess 81909~: Help me, How do I stop? I’m only 21 and the past 3 years I have taken sleeping pills every night to sleep!
Everyone tells me I’m too young to be taking sleeping pills to sleep. There is not a single night I haven not taken them. It’s got so bad that there are nights I have to take 3 of them to sleep. Sometimes they dont even work. I don’t know what to do anymore. My last option is a sleep doctor to help me with this. I have become so used to it that I can’t even fall asleep with out them. I have tried so hard to go sleep with out taking them and have been unsuccessful and I really want to stop. Even when I’m so tired I just can’t seem to just fall asleep like I used to before with out them. My family, friends and everyone I know have tried helping me and still no change. I know in the long run it’s really going to affect my health my mom also has the same problem she has been taking them for 20 years now and I definitely don’t want to be taking them for that long. Has anyone ever experienced this or know any remedies. Any advice you can give me would be really appreciated.
Thank you
When I mean sleeping pills, I’m talking about over the counter $ 3 pills you get at walmart like tylenol. I have never taken any of those really strong ones like ambien. I’m 21 I’m college and I work so I buy everything for myself. My mom doesnt even encourage me to take them. And I will never smoke weed, never have and never will. I think my lack of sleep or not been able to sleep is due to stress in my life, I’ve been through a lot over the past years of my life.

try weed it really does work once ur high it takes u to sleep
go see a doctor. your body is so used to them now thats why you cant fall asleep without them
I know whats it’s like to not be able to sleep when you want to and I have at all costs tried to avoid sleeping tablets because they don’t even seem to work and I don’t want to get hooked. I suggest that you do go and see a doctor about it because sleeping pills are a fom of drug which you have become addicted to it seems , so you need medical advice on how to get off them again.
Go see a doctor
What u can try is taking a hot bath or even try sleepy time tea.
You don’t mention what kind of sedatives you are taking. Most sleeping pills are so addictive that people experience withdrawals after taking them daily for as little as a week… Three years! Don’t expect to be able to stop on your own. Go see a doctor (NOT the one who’s giving you the pills… ) or visit your local addictions centre.
Where are you getting those pills? Any doctor who prescribes daily sleeping pills for an otherwise healthy 21-year old ought to be reported to the AMA! Please don’t tell me your mother is giving them to you…
I had similar sleep problems. I had to make a sleep room.
A sleep room has darkened windows by black shades or similar way of shutting out light.
It must be free from noise. Even if it means moving your bed to one side of the room that is the quietest.
The hardest thing for people to do is also the most important. Go out and buy a great bed. I spent 16oo bucks and it was so worth it. And get a pillow that you love, not like but love.
There must be no television or radio in this room, just the great bed and loving pillow.
When you know it is time to sleep, you may take a warm bath or have a warm milk, but you go to your sleep room intending to nothing but go to sleep. Not think about tomorrow or what happened today but to go to sleep.
It will begin to work right away. I couldnt believe it.
It may help you to make a list before you go into your sleep room of all that did happen that day that you wanted to think about and a list of things you have to do tomorrow, then think about it then leave it out of the sleep room.
Good luck.
You’re right, you’re way too young to be taking pills to help you sleep. Even if you were much older, you shouldn’t have to use them every night.
It’s going to be very difficult for you, but you’ve got to wean yourself off these pills. Are these prescription medications or over-the-counter medications? (I can’t imagine that you’d be able to be getting such large numbers over such a long period by prescription.) It would probably be a good idea to go to a doctor for help with this. If you don’t want to do that, my suggestion would be to first start reducing the number of pills you take per night until you get down to one per night. After a couple of nights on the lower number of pills, skip a night and take no pills. Continue gradually reducing the number of pills and days until you are no longer taking any.
There are techniques you can learn (and the more you practice them, the better they work) that can help you relax and fall asleep at night.
1. Try not to eat or drink caffeine after 4:00 in the afternoon.
2. Set up a somewhat regular evening routine, at least while you’re getting used to this.
3. Learn deep-breathing exercises.
4. Get regular exercise, but not within 2 hours of the time you want to go to sleep.
5. Learn relaxation techniques. There are lots of books, classes and DVDs available.
6. Do not watch TV in bed.
7. Try visualization to help you relax.
8. Keep a note pad and pen on your nightstand.
If you think of something that you need to do or want to remember, jot down a couple of words to help you remember it tomorrow, then put it out of your mind.
9. Try drinking a cup of herbal tea before you go to bed, especially one of the ones especially recommended for relaxation.
10. Before you go to bed, try to clear your mind of whatever might be keeping it restless. Make notes about ideas to resolve issues, or people to discuss things with. Once you’ve done that, try to just put it all away till tomorrow.
Best of luck. I know this isn’t easy, but think about your poor kidneys and liver, filtering all this stuff night after night after night . . .

Sleep problems are particularly common in industrialized societies. Unfortunately, they also have a large number of different and overlapping causes, so finding an answer based on limited information is bound to be impossible.
Possibilities of causes include life stressors, depression, anxiety, certain neurological conditions, drug use, certain endocrine conditions, primary sleep disorders and even just plain ‘ol poor sleep hygeine.
The specific treatment of sleep problems depends on its cause. However, any treatment ALWAYS involves good sleep hygeine, e.g. no activity in bed except sleep and sex, no distractions in bedroom, no laying in bed awayke more than 20 minutes before getting up briefly, no caffeine too late, no alchohol too late, regular bed times, regular wake times, no naps, etc. Look up “sleep hygeine” on any search engine. Some have suggested melatonin supplements are somewhat useful in resetting your circadian rhythms.
If good sleep hygeine does not improve things, it will certainly be worth discussing with your doctor. At the very least, it will be important to ensure there is not an easily treatable (or serious) physical condition causing this.
As always, discuss these and any questions with your physician.
