Question by Loves her PFC: can sleeping aids cause attitude changes?
my boyfriend insists that he has insomnia, and illegally gets sleeping aids from someone else in the house. whenever i talk to him later at night about an hour or so after he takes these prescription strength sleeping aids, he is different. he says things like “why do you love me” and things like that. or “how many guys are hitting on you?” and just seems very depressed in everything that he says.

what can i do? what can he do?

Benzos (ativan, xanax, klonopin, valium are the common ones) and sleeping aids (ambien) all made me very agressive and made my depression symptoms from bipolar worse. I think any psychiatrist would tell you that you can have serious behavioral side effects from these meds & it is right on the warning label for ambien, finally (years after I had a total meltdown on it).

Research shows that sleep aids only help for the first week you use them. After that, they only SEEM to help & you get rebound insomnia when you try to stop them. Patients will swear up & down that the meds are still helping, but sleep studies show the meds are not helping anymore. It is a mistake to use sleeping meds.
