Question by G: Are there any OTC sleep aids that do not include diphenhydramine?
I’m in desperate need of some sleep, but I have an adverse reaction to Benadryl. I can’t get in to see my doctor for several weeks, so until then, I need something I can take 1-2 evenings each week. I’ve tried melatonin, with no luck

Have you ever tryed Kava Kava or valerian Root? These are both items that you can find at most Natural foods or Herbal stores. they are safe and over the counter. Just look at drug interactions as you would any vitamin and or herbal supplilment. Melatonin works for most people, but over a longer period of time, not as a Knock me out type drug. Also exercising before bed, Reading a boring book, a drink of warm milk, no colas, coffees or anything with caffeine after 5;00 p.m are all ways to help you sleep. Make sure the room is quiet, dark, wear ear plugs and or a sleep mask, including the ones that have nice herbs in them, make sure the room is not too cold, too hot or stuffy, and you can set your self up for a good night sleep. Some poeple like to take a nice soothing bath before bed also.
You can also ask your herbal salesperosn for some relaxing herbal teas that can help you relax that are caffeine free. A common one that has been arouond for a long time and in most grocery stores as well goes by the name of, Sleepy Time Tea, and it works for lots of people. Good luck. fluffypurrcat

Benadryl drives me up the wall. Sleep with that in my system? You’re kidding! There’s something available at your pharmacist called Sleep Md. It’s strictly herbal, and is perfectly safe. Plus it really helps. I know cause I’m impossible to get to sleep. Give it a try and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!! :o )

There is a drug called Doxylamine Succinate. It is made by Unisom so you have to check the package because they also sell unisom that contains diphenhydramine. It is also available as a generic store brand under the name nighttime sleep aid or something similar. Doxylamine succinate has been shown to be more effective than many prescription sleep aids including some prescription barbiturates and it is fairly cheap if you buy generic.
