Realtime Website Analytics Q&A: Are there any natural sleep aids that have worked for you? | magnoliaeducationfoundation.org

Question by linka_and_mia: Are there any natural sleep aids that have worked for you?
I would love some advice…I have trouble sleeping, this unfortunately runs in the family…i am in my late 20′s so i can’t take melatonin… any ideas for me?
i think it’s fine for men to take regardless of age… the lady at a local heath food store told me that if you are a woman (pre menopause) taking it will actually stop your own natural production of melatonin, due to hormones. Basically you will have to continue the supplement to have any melatonin in your body…

I grow lavendar, and put the leaves in my pillow case. Anything lavendar, that you buy is soothing. There are lavendar bath products at Bath and Body Works. Hope this helps!

You can drink “Sleepy Time Tea”. I sometimes will drink it plain no sugar on nights I can’t sleep and if I want to go to sleep a little sooner I’ll use two tea bags. Usually it takes about 20 minutes to kick in.

Try valerian root drops from the health food store. You mix it with water and drink. Tastes a little nasty though…

I’ve suffered from insomnia since I was a toddler. I’ve been using Calms Forté by Hyland for the last 15 years. It’s a homeopathic remedy, non habit forming. Doesn’t make you sleepy , just relaxes you, and it doesn’t interfere with prescription medications. Of course, I try to limit my intake of caffeine, and I try not to take whatever is on my mind to bed.

i don’t think this will really help you but benidryl knocks me out within ten twnety minutes… you might want to try relaxing a long time before you to to bed, so that you have a while to wind down that way your not as energetic by the time bed time rolls around (relaxing baths, fregrant candles, quiet, relaxing music, t.v. show, or sitting outside watching the clouds or something like that) if nothing else, it should get you to relax enough so that you rest and regain some energy…
hope that helps some!!

My doctor did a regular blood test and found I was on the low side of the spectrum for levels of Magnesium on my blood. I was suffering from waking several times during the night and most often not sleeping more than 3 hours on any given night. I had requested the blood test for magnesium because of leg cramps which started occuring after about 6 yrs of insomnia

The magnesium took a long time to build up in my bloodstream but after taking two different really good brands (500 mg of one type in the morning and the other type in the evening) my other symptoms cleared up and so did the sleep problems… But it took 6 months of taking them to get here. I had some shoulder and leg pain took therapy and drugs for that and it never helped and the magnesium helped that too. (but I warn you it takes a long time to get it built up in the blood) If you take too much at first it will just go out in your very frequent stool. So to protect against too frequent bowels function, start slowly with only one a day… then build to twice a day for at least 6 months to see really great results.

A warm glass of milk or a hot cup of Sleepy Time tea often helps. Also, calcium supplements with vitamin D can help. But warm milk is best.

I started taking Melatonin in my 40′s, am now 52 and still take it. I don’t understand why you can’t take it. It works, it’s natural and safe!

Chamomile tea is a wonderful calmative and might assist with sleep. A stronger and still natural herb would be Valerian Root.

I find that if I can’t sleep, I get up early and go for a walk for an hour. Have no coffee after 3pm in the afternoon and have some warm milk in the evening. You will feel tired and sleepy.

What works like a charm for me, at least 98% of the time, is a calcimate plus tablet I get at GNC. I take 2-3 of them right at bedtime, it makes all the difference in the world. I also used to sleep very poorly, and while I still wake up a lot, I go back to sleep quickly.

Try “Sleepy Time Extra” tea by Celestial Seasonings (be sure to use cream, milk, or soy milk to cool it down and also helps add “heaviness” to it also use splenda to sweeten it; avoid sugar and chemicals), a higher thread count in your sheets are dreamy to your body, a comfy matress with great pillows, purchase a relaxing “plug-in” for your bedroom, proper room temperature, the blanket selection, the RIGHT noisemaker;rain, fan, waterfall, ocean, light classical music, piano, NO TV, you choose best, if sleepind during the day block all light, and think of your favorite things before you sleep, and last but not least visit a natural foods (any kind) store they will help!

I’d recommend melatonin, which is a sleep aid and sleeping tablet. It helps many people with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, elderly individuals, and other people, with sleeping problems. You take it an hour or two hours before bed-time…and..you’re sleep. No questions about it.

Michelle

Ps…People in their 20s CAN take melatonin..who told you this? LOL…

There is a combination of Calcium and Magenisium (Cal-Mag, for short) that can help you sleep. Take it as a pill form or powder, I prefer that form best.

Yoga and especially a technique called Pranayama , to be done after you come from college or work in the evening.
Secondly have a 15 min meditation in your schedule.
Some kind of aerobic activity like walking , brisk walking or a jog to circulate the blood throughout your body.
Drink correct proportions of water every day.

i always find listening to music or reading a book gets me sleepy, so i do that a lot. or just sit in my bed with music or no music on, and go through all my thoughts, then i’ll find myself quiet and not thinking anything. that means i’m tired.

fallenangels2 December 23, 2011 at 7:45 am

Really exercise your brain during the day. It’ll be tired at night and well that’s why we need sleep.

Put on some really nice music. Something like Andrea Bocelli or Bob James. Volume real low, it’ll put you right out.
