I take Lexapro. I would like to try something like Valerian or Melatonin. Is it safe to take either of these?

NEVER,NEVER, NEVER, mix medications without first checking with your Pharmacist. Taking two different medications, one that calms you down, and another that makes you sleep could cause you to NOT wake up.

melatonin is used frequently since it is in the vitamin section of a pharmacy but i would talk to a doctor to make sure that everything will be ok. labels do not say much because most aren’t tested by the fda so definitely get it checked with your doctor before taking anything

I think you should check with your doctor before you take anything that might be questionable. However, I have heard that warm milk induces relaxation which can lead to sleep–just llike a baby.

Sleeping problems are just what the term implies and has to do with not being able to fall asleep, and when asleep, not being able to remain sleeping for reasonable amount of time. Also, while a person is asleep, he or she is usually conscious that he or she is sleeping though not conscious about the fact that they are snoring or even that they are suffering from sleep apnea. Sleeping problems such as apnea have an actual physical source. When this is not the case the source of the problem is always in the person’s waking life. Sleeping problems occur in almost all people with mental disorders , including those with depression and schizophrenia. People with depression often awaken in the early hours of the morning and find themselves unable to get back to sleep.

Avoid daytime sleep if possible. Daytime naps steal hours from nighttime slumber. Avoid staying in bed for long periods of time while awake, or going to bed because of boredom. Relax by reading, taking a bath, or listening to soothing music before getting to bed.

Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol: Caffeine, a stimulant, is found in coffee, chocolate, some soft drinks, nonherbal teas, diet drugs and some pain relievers. Smoking disrupts deep sleep cycles and can prompt nicotine withdrawal when you first wake up. Avoid alcohol before going to bed at night.
