Question by lil white: Is worst/better to take sleeping pills to sleep or to knock urself out with alcohol?
sometimes when i’m stressed out, I’ll take sleeping pills to sleep early so I don’t have to think, wonder if it’s better to replace it with alcohol, but afraid of the hang over the next day. when life is shitty, I rather sleep it away rather acting on my compulsions.
I want to Thank you all for the great answers!! esp. samuel and spartan, I know it’s a problem and it needs to be fixed and running away doesn’t help get rid of the problem and only does temporary relief. I have no excuse not to target the problem when there’s so much pple out here who actually cares so much!! once again, Thank you all you guys!! I appreciate it!

I like to drink my problems away…not too much though. Just have 2 or 3. Enough to relax!!! During the week anyhow.

Siu Bok,

Take a Tylenol PM with a few glasses of wine.

Life will be good! (for that night anyway)

don’t start on the alcohol, after awhile it won’t knock you out and you’ll just forget everything you did the night before and for some reason everyone will be pissed off at you. just don’t take the sleeping pills every single night.

better to become dependent on sleeping pills, then become and alchoholic….it takes longer for you to die…

I personally choose Tylenol PM. I take 2 every night about 8. I am usually asleep by 11 that way. I take it because I have really bad insomnia. Although I can relate to why you would want to sleep as well. See, some people will judge you and tell you that you should deal with your stress, not me, I love sleep. Sleep is good! I can sleep 12 hours a night-easy! Although I am alarmed by your last comment referring to acting on your compulsions! A bit frightened by that comment.

Good Luck!!

I think you should take something herbal so you don’t get addicted to it like you would with alcohol. Always check with your doctor if you are taking any medications because sleeping pills can become a problem if you mix them with medication, even with an herbal pill. Be safe and ask questions.

They work well together.

Please don’t use alchohol and pills. Try Unisom. I find these work best and quickly and they don’t leave your head feeling like a sponge in the morning.

That’s awesome that so many people have so much information to share on how to form new addictions.
If life is that bad, try to solve the problem or problems in your life. Get help if you can’t do it on your own. Life isn’t supposed to be that way, and getting hooked on a substance in order to carry out a basic life function like sleep is only going to make things worse in the long run.
Don’t sleep it away, don’t act on your compulsions, solve the problem! Make radical changes in your life if you need to. Is what you have now worth holding on to, at the price of being miserable, not being able to sleep, and needing to take an addictive substance to be able to deal with life? Consider a new job, a new place to live (another town or state maybe?), maybe different friends? What makes you happy? Follow that!

Although alcohol can put you to sleep, it doesn’t provide a quality sleep, so it is better to try alternatives. Exercise during the day (not close to the time of going to bed). Do something relaxing before bed, like read a book, or take a bath. If it is stress that keeps you up, write the stuff that bothers you down before going to bed. That way you can “put it aside” and come back to it later. It does help.

Both are dangerous if used as a regular habit over a long period of time. They are both addictive, sleeping pills probably more so than alcohol — if you become accustomed to using pills to get to sleep every night, your body could become literally unable to fall asleep without the pills. Both can also cause liver damage over the long term, which would not be fun to deal with.

For occasional use, I’d suggest the pills rather than the alcohol, simply because the amount of alcohol required to “knock yourself out” could have other undesirable effects. If it’s done in moderation, though — NOT every night or every other night — neither is probably going to cause you any long term problems.

From the way you describe things it sounds as though you may be experiencing depression, in the medical sense. Needing to knock yourself out so that you don’t have to think about your problems is not a good sign — and of course you have to realize that knocking yourself out is NOT going to make any of your problems go away. If this is a chronic problem for you, perhaps talking to a doctor about some antidepressant medication might be the healthiest option for you. You may not want to be on that forever either, but taking an antidepressant for a little while can help you “take the edge off” and get a better grip on what’s going on in your life so hopefully you won’t be as stressed out afterward.

Been there, done that (still doing that). I’ve done both… but Sleeping pills are much less addictive. Problem with alcohol is that you build up a tolerance and you need more and more as time goes on. Plus, you end up with a hang over that makes the next day even worse. I use 1 Tylenol PM Vanilla (gentle on your tummy). It helps me sleep when I’m stressed and I can wake up the next day with out a problem. good luck!

A warm cup of decaf black tea, or a glass of warm milk knocks me out.

Thinking is the problem for most insomniacs.. Is it not within reason to learn how to turn the thought patterns off? Your tv must have a timer on it.. have it turn itself off after it has put you to sleep..
