Question by Chris: Does diphenhydramine (in Tylenol PM and other non-prescription sleep aids) interfere with REM sleep?
If unsure of that, then do you think diphenhydramine decreases the overall quality of sleep?

I have used this as a sleep aid and find that I sleep really well. My problem with it is that I still feel doped up 4-8 hours after I wake up

Yes the Tylenol P.M. contains the same thing as benydryl and will definitely interfere with sleep after 4 hours. It may make you fall asleep as it takes the edge off your nerves for a little while –but then you will wake up after about 4 -hours and can’t get back to sleep–this has been (my experience) with Tylenol p.m. and also it gives me severe leg and feet cramps. Be careful with this medicine and all others. Don’t get hooked on any sleep medicines.

The common side affects of this medication are as follows: Drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, restlessness in children, incoordination, blurred vision. The unusual are: Upper belly discomfort, loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhoea, irritability. The severe but rare are: (stop medication, cosult doctor): Unusual bleeding.
Make sure you take this medication as directed, because Overdose may result in covulsions, hallucinations, delirium, anxiety, muscle spasm, rapid heart rate, flushing, dry skin, dry mouth & coma. First aid involved inducing vomiting & seeking urgent medical attention. I think medication affects people differently, what might be right for one person, can be the totally oppisite for someone else. If you are experiencing disturbed sleep, I suggest you try another medication.
