Question by k. renee.: Could sleep aids be causing what seems to be a slowing of reaction and thinking?
I take Diphenhydramine for sleepless nights and I took it last night. This morning I woke up and felt groggy in my mind. It was hard to wake up and I feel like I’m not functioning as well as I usually do. Could sleep aids be causing me real trouble? I try not to use them unless I have to, and I do sometimes have to. Help!

Sure. Ambian is a dilly for this problem. In a week, you won’t know your friend’s name, and in two, you will barely know your own.
Most people who take these need to understand that concentration becomes very low, and if you drive, you may find that you really have to pay attention, or you just may pull out in front of a car and wonder where it really came from.
You might find other things besides pharmaceuticals helpful… a warm bath, no tv, a dark room, a nice scented candle, no chocolate or coffee or cokes, after 3pm, and don’t drink alcohol in the evenings… it may make you drowsy early, but you will be wide awake at 2 am…..eat an early dinner, and read things that are not important. As well, be very active during the day… get tired with physical activity..take a 20 min walk, even if it is just in your house, in a mall or around the block. Don’t nap during the day.
If pain keeps you awake, try Tylenol with Benedryl.

They have come a long way since diphenhydramine. Sleep aids are more gentle now and more forgiving the next day.Ambien lets me sleep and wake up without a “hangover”.
Usually what happened to me was by the time I realized it was going to be a sleepless night and take the benadryl it would still be in my system when i got up. Making me tired with a detached feeling.
