Question by ljv42: Can you identify my “tropical magnolia”?
Have just purchased a small, what was described as a “malayan magnolia” – not in flower – and unfortunately the seller didn’t know the botanical name.
The leaves are lightish green, soft (not stiff), veined, quite hairy, downward hanging and pointed – more lanceolate.
The seller – who is well known to us and trusted – says it grows to about 8 feet, with a somewhat weeping habit and has huge white, fragrant flowers.
At the moment, it looks like it has a spreading habit.
The bark is fairly smooth – except up around the leaves where it is a bit downy – and light in colour.
We live in the tropics and are well acquainted with the usual (previously) michelias and magnolias – coco, champaca, alba etc.
Help appreciated. Thanks.
**Especially appreciated would be any links to info and/or images.**
TopTropicals, W3 Tropicos, Mobot I’ve already tried. The photo of Magnolia Montana at TopTropicals has much darker green leaves and they are smooth and a different shape, although the picture of the mature tree looks how I expect mine will finish up, but with more of a spreading canopy.
