Question by Buy U A Drank: Acne treatments?
I will no longer buy anything because nothing works… But in terms of a doctor, or dermatologist, what are some things that can be done for me and what is the cheapest? Thanks.

Acne forms under the skin, which means washing away surface oils does not do much to prevent or cure it. It is a myth that people get acne because they don’t wash enough. Gentle washing is important, but too much washing can irritate the whiteheads and blackheads, causing them to be more infected and making more pimples.

Use a mild cleanser such as Cetaphil, or an acne cleanser such as Aveeno acne bar, Neutrogena Acne Wash or Benzoyl Peroxide 5% bar.

Exfoliating, which removes the layer of dead skin cells, is also important for healthy skin. After washing your face with a mild cleanser, exfoliate with face facial scrub one to two times a week. This can help reduce dead skin cells and debris which can clog pores and cause more acne.

To avoid further clogging of your pores, all cosmetics, lotions and sunscreens should be oil-free! To avoid dry skin, use an oil-free lotion such as Complex 15. To avoid sunburn use oil-free products such as Neutrogena or Coppertone Oil-free Sunscreen. And remember to beware of hair products and gels, as they tend to be very oily.

Look for product labels that read “Non-comedogenic”, meaning they won’t clog pores.

The best thing you can do for acne is to visit a dermatologist. They will likely start you on antibiotics and tell you what products will work best for your skin.

Try using baking soda as a scrub on a daily basis. This will help immensely to clear it up. Just mix w/ water & scrub it on. I use it w/ my clients & I use it myself. I can always tell when I am slacking & need to use it more frequently.
Another option is to work w/ an aesthetician & see what products they suggest. A good skincare regiment can truly help. It doesn’t even have to be expensive.
My suggestion for now is use Cetaphil to cleanse, baking soda to exfoliate &then a great moisturizer (all skin types need moisture). Murad is great, Philosophy, Aveda are too.

If it is really bad, see a dermatologist for meds to get it under control. Also, a blood purifier from the health store will work too if you want to use holistic. Skin is a way to know that something is out of balance internally. You don’t have to take them forever, just until it improves. The thing about dermatologists is they first turn to medications to stop the problems- pushing meds is what they know, unfortunately, aestheticians know product lines to help solve the problems w/out meds (or they should :) . There is a lot of trial & error because no line is perfect for everyone. What I suggested you do is pretty basic & you should see a difference w/in about 2 weeks.

This may seem a little silly but it works. Growing up I had horrible acne and did everything and took everything that the doctor gave me but nothing worked. I had peeling and burning skin from everything they gave me. When my two brothers came to live with me they had the horrible curse also. A friend of mine told me to try something mild. While walking through the store I came across baby bath. I bought it thinking that it is gentle and has nothing harsh in it because it is for babies. My brothers used it in the morning and at night within one week their acne was totally almost gone. Within about two weeks it was even better. It was a life saver. My brothers both swear by it now and so do I.

It only cost a dollar. IT is worth the try.

You have to attack acne where it starts, with your diet. For me, diet was the cause and solution. Topical medications fight the symptoms. Start by eliminating trans fats and eating more fruits and vegetables. Once you start cleaning up the inside of your body, by eating properly, the outside of your body (your skin) will be get cleaned up too. I started a website to document my problem and solution.

You might find it helpful to read my story. Just remember to eat an all natural/organic diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Stay away from processed foods. Use mild, all natural cleansers and don’t pick at your face. Get lots of sleep and enough water for your body weight. Remember, clean body = clean skin. While you’re waiting for your skin to clear, remind yourself that acne is a challenge that you will overcome soon. Once you’re rid of it, tell all your friends how you did it. That’s what I’m doing. God Bless.
